Rosie's Quilt

Rosie is one of the students who took our Beginner's Star Sampler Course with Chris Franses last term. She popped in today to show me the completed quilt before she gives it to someone for Christmas.

Isn't it stunning? I love the blue batiks - very calming.

I'm told that the quilting was done by Monkey Buttons - a nice simple meander that doesn't detract from the fabulous fabrics.

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge

OK, so as some of you may already know, I am a prolific starter of projects, but I very rarely finish things. The main reason is because I am too scared to quilt them!

So much effort, love and sometimes despair goes into my projects that to just finish them by stitching in the ditch or using straight lines only would be a shame. So in this coming year I have set myself the challenge of practising more Free Motion Quilting (FMQ).

It just so happens that SewCalGal is hosting a FMQ Quilting challenge for 2012! How cool is that? Each month the gods of the FMQ world will share with us mere mortals lots of hints, tips, tutorials and secrets to perfecting FMQ. If you are like me, why not take up the challenge too? We can share our progress, triumphs and disasters as we conquer our fear of and hopefully go some way towards mastering FMQ.

Stained Glass Appliqué Workshop

As things begin to quieten down, now is the time to start making all the samples for next term's classes.

Completed this morning is the Stained Glass Appliqué sample for our workshop on Wednesday 24th January between 10am and 4pm.

Part of our Have A Go! series, these workshops are kitted for you so you can just turn up and stitch without fretting over which fabrics to use etc.

The Have A Go series is designed to introduce you to a new technique, teach the basics and to give you chance to build your confidence on a small project before embarking on more complex things.

Here is the mini project we will be making in the workshop above.

The project features KONA Cotton Solids from our extensive range and your kit includes all the fabrics required for the top as well as the 1/2" bias tape.

This stunning yet simple block measures 18" and is perfect for a small wallhanging or cushion. As it can also be "quilted as you go" and so takes just a small amount of time to complete. Very satisfying!

Late Night Shopping tonight in Eccleshall

Morning all,

Just a quick notice to let you know that this evening is the Late Night Shopping even in Eccleshall.

The Eccleshall Business Focus Group (EBFG) has once again arranged the Eccleshall late night shopping event which this year will take place on Thursday 1st December under the lights of the towns Christmas trees.

It will be a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of the many seasonal bargains in our own shopping centre.

In addition to the many food and drink establishments in the town shops will be open late for your convenience. There will also be live music in the town.

This year, the EBFG is providing a prize draw of a £100 gift voucher to a lucky customer who shops at an EBFG member's premises. Each EBFG member premises will offer the shopper an opportunity to enter their details into the prize draw. The winning customer will win £100 to spend in any EBFG member business (this could be retail or business.)

We shall be open until 6:30pm tonight and then whizzing over to the Staffordshire Patchworkers and Quilters (SPQ) Christmas Party at Walton Community Centre, Stone ST15 0EQ.

Why not join us for some festive cheer and a Quilters Buffet - no food, just plenty of fibre if you know what I mean!!!

Tonight is also the deadline for the SPQ Chairman's Challenge - mine is almost finished, just a bit more beading and then to bind it! eeeekkkk! I love a deadline me!

Class Lists for January and February 2012

Okay, Okay, it has been a while since I posted....no excuses - Life just gets in the way sometimes.

Anyway, I have been busy during my absence and amongst other things I have finally got around to putting together the class lists for the coming year. January and February classes can be viewed here:

We have some favourites returning including our beautiful Beginners Star Sampler course with Chris Franses and the hugely popular Toothbrush Rugs with Tracy James.

Toothbrush Rugs with Tracy James

Amongst some new additions are our "Have a Go" series of one day classes designed to give you the opportunity to try out new techniques. January's class is Stained Glass Appliqué and February's is Machine Appliqué. Each class includes a mini project and kit to complete giving you the chance to build confidence before commencing on your own larger projects.

Begin Machine Quilting
Why not join Chris Franses for 5 half day sessions that teach you how to quilt those quilts! Each week you will learn a different machine quilting technique - working on a provided sample in class before going home to put your newly acquired skills to good use and start turning those beautiful patchwork tops into stunning quilted quilts! Your class fee includes fabrics and waddings for the in class samples.

As always, class sizes are limited to just 6 ensuring that everyone gets adequate time and attention from their tutor. Sewing machines are provided, so you just need to bring yourself and your fabrics and have some fun!

Toothbrush Rugs and Star Samplers

So its Tuesday night and what am I doing???

That’s right – whittling toothbrushes! Am I crazy?? Nope – tomorrow is the second of our toothbrush rug classes. Both classes were booked up almost immediately so here I am listening to “Nights With Alice Cooper” on Classic Rock making toothbriush tools for the lovely ladies from the Rugeley Rabble who are coming tomorrow. I have a feeling these classes are going to be popular for a little while so we made a jig for making more tools and more class dates are set for the New Year.

Speaking of crazy, it has been a while since I posted, but August/ September seems to be a hectic time for me….I have been busy getting my project ready for SEWHIP magazine (yep!! That’s right – whether or not they print it I don’t know, but it is due out in Issue 35 – just something simple and festive). I am soooo excited – can’t wait (I hope they print it)

I have also been really busy getting the new classroom ready and a couple of weeks ago those lovely guys over at Janome sent me my 7 (yes 7!) brand new CXL301 sewing machines. Wohoo! It is a cracking little machine with just enough gizmo’s to make life easier but not overly complicated. It features an automatic needle threader (I can’t live without one), the fab great needle up/down button (v. important when pivoting etc.) and thread cutter as well as 102 stitch functions. I am really enjoying using it…it is smaller than my MC9500 but very very capable.

Speaking of classes, we had a full schedule last week:

Wednesday was Woven Wonders and despite a couple of last minute cancellations, Tracy, Rachel and Bridget had fun making notebook covers with woven fabric details

Thursday was the first day of our fully subscribed Star Sampler class with Chris Franses. This beginner’s course runs for 5 sessions and aims to teach all the basics of patchwork and quilting whilst making something both stunningly beautiful and useful too! This class was so popular we had to add a Saturday group too which is also fully subscribed. We are taking names for next term’s class already so be sure to let us know if you are interested.

Friday was our Block of the Month meeting and this week we were picking sashing and border fabrics. We offer a number of different colour ways to choose from in our Nifty Nine Patch Sampler quilt, but this session allows participants to really make their quilts their own.

And finally, Saturday was the first of our toothbrush rug classes under the very capable stewardship of Tracy James - a new tutor here at Pollyanna Patchwork. Going under the name of PurpleCraftyT, Tracy is indeed very crafty with many facets and talents. She makes fantastic fabric covered boxes and will be teaching a number of classes for us including Handmade Christmas Cards later on in the year. Here are a few images from the days events.

Bigshot Quilting Update

Today I gave my very first talk to a quilt group! I visited the lovely ladies from the Trinity Quilters in Sutton Coldfield. I was quite excited and nervous, but things seemed to go well and without any problems.

I have had a couple of comments from other followers asking for more information on Bigshot Quilting? Given that most of the ladies at the group today had never heard of it either, allow me elaborate a little more:

The name Bigshot Quilting was made up on the spot when I was asked by the programme secretary at Trinity Quilters what my talk topic was going to be!

Simply put, Bigshot Quilting means using the Sizzix Bigshot die-cutting machine to enhance your patchwork and quilting projects. So no I am not a quilting bigshot - not yet anyway ;)

The bigshot diecutting machine is used primarily in cardmaking and scrapbooking circles, but I first came across it when looking into ways to create paper hexagons for a Grandmother's Garden Quilt....I couldn't bear the thought of all that drawing and cutting out!

I am too time poor for that - the same applies to applique projects. I love the look of applique, but do not have the time, patience or attention to detail to be able to perfect it. But with my bigshot, I don't need to!

I also use it for Rag Quilting projects, Making fabric flowers and accessories, pieced quilts and managing my stash.

Over the coming weeks, I'll share with you details and images of the projects that I have created using my bigshot as well as the instructions for how to complete these projects for yourself.

OK, so this post is a little late...I had hoped to get it up yesterday (hence the title), but for whatever reason it didn't happen.

I am speaking at Trinity Quilters in Sutton Coldfield next month on the subject of Bigshot Quilting.
So to celebrate (finally) finishing one of my samples, I thought I'd give you the instructions on how to make this cute little pillow.

It was so quick that (it theory) it only takes an afternoon to do.....why oh why it took me 3 weeks to get around to turning it into a pillow I'll never know. The "top" only took an hour to make! Are any of you reading this like me? I think once the challenge has gone from a piece, I tend to lose interest I dunno?

Anyway on with the pillow:

To make this little cutie you will need:

♥ Sizzix Bigshot or Accuquilt Go!/ Go! Baby die cutting machine
♥ Accuquilt Hearts Die (55029)
♥ 1/2m of Background fabric for your pillow front and backs
♥ FQ of Calico/ Muslin
♥ Batting piece approx. 17" square
♥ scraps of fabrics for hearts (6" square)
♥ FQ of fusible web

1. Fuse web to wrong side of your fabric scraps
2. Cut 8 large (5") hearts and 4 medium (3") hearts using die-cutting machine. (When using accuquilt dies in the Bighsot, you will need an additional shim - I just use a couple of index cards or the cardboard from the back of a refill pad)
3. Cut your cushion pieces out:
Front: 1 x 16" square
Back: 2 x 10" x 16" pieces
6. Set aside your back pieces for now. Fold and finger press your cushion front to find the centre point. Peel the backing paper off your hearts and place onto your cushion front using the photo as a guide.
7. When you are happy with the placement, fuse your hearts to the front piece according to your fusible web manufacturers instructions.
8. To ensure that the hearts did not fray, I used a decorative machine stitch to hold them in place.

♥ I used threads in the same shade as my fabrics so that the blanket stitching did not show. You could make a feature of the stitching by using a contrasting or black thread instead.

9. Prepare your quilt sandwich by layering your assembled pillow front on top of the batting and calico backing and quilt as desired. I free-motion stippled quite densely around the hearts and put a classic cross hatch in the centre. Thinking about it now, it would look great if I had added a couple of layers of scrap batting BEFORE I topstitched around my hearts to create a trapunto effect.

To finish your pillow:

1. Turn and press a hem on one long side of each of your back pieces (I usually turn under 1/2" and then 1/2" again)

2. Topstitch close to the edge for a nice finish.

3. Lay your 2 backing pieces right side down on the RIGHT side of your pillow front.

4. Stitch all the way around using a 1/2" seam allowance, clip your corners and turn through.

5. Stuff in a cushion inner and admire your handiwork!

This would make a great last minute gift for someone.

Classes & Workshops Update

For those of you that have come back expecting a preview of the Simplicity Bias Tape maker, I apologise unreservedly. It would seem that I am destined to have no luck with technology this week and as such I cannot bring you the video that I had planned.

I have searched YouTube for you though to bring you a of video of others using their bias tape makers and I promise a more thorough review of the product as soon as possible.

It really is this easy!

And with precut 2.5" strips it gets even easier!

New Arrivals

New products this week include another load of Kona Solids and some great yo-yo makers from Clover. Known more traditionally as a suffolk puff, yo-yo's are a great way of using scraps to make embellishments and other items.

We have 3 types of yo-yo maker in stock: Circles, Hearts and Butterfly. All are the large sizes making them easy for smaller quilters to use and make large embellishments quickly and easily. A perfect way to introduce your little quilter to a new technique.

New Beginnings....? and a Blog Giveaway - Hurray!

Last night I attended a meeting of the Eccleshall Business Focus Group. Being based in Eccleshall, it kinda makes sense doesn't it?

Anyhoo, as part of the evening's proceedings, we had a brief presentation from Nick Evans at ExtraMile Communications - also based in Eccleshall on the topic of Social Media Networking. Nick very kindly spent a few moments of his time at the end talking me through the next steps for my social media marketing strategy! Eeek - big words, trying to stay focused.

So it turns out, I have the constituent parts in place, I just need to use them. So here is the plan:

I promise to blog at least once a week to you folks who are kind enough to follow me - Customers, past present and future, friends, family and complete strangers interested in all things patchwork and quilting.

I now have a content plan ....sounds interesting doesn't it. You too can contribute to this plan.

Phew!! Just about sorted after Nantwich!

Well, what a busy start to the year we have had!

Firstly, we launched the new website, that I spent many a late night getting ready, then we had the "Let's Go Shopping" feature in Patchwork & Quilting magazine FEB 2011. This past Sunday it was the turn of the Quilters Fabric Sale at Nantwich Civic Hall.

An early start for the Pollyanna team as we had to be at the hall for 8:00am and ready to trade at 9:45 so at 7:00am we set off, our van laden with lots of scrummy fabrics all at £4.00 per metre!!! No I am not crazy, just making space for our new arrivals.

Anyone who thinks that running a Quilt store is easy, please volunteer here!!

I was working in the shop all day Saturday whilst preparing stock for sale, Rob was dropping the boys off with Granny and got to me at about 2pm. By 10pm we had the van loaded and all the associated gubbings together. (So an unusually early night for us!)

We were then up at the crack of sparrows to get to Nantwich in time, only to discover that there was no ramped access to the hall and our pitch! So I had to lug 10 (yes 10) boxes of fabric (~20 bolts in each) up the stairs and across the hall manually....superMom! I have muscles now that I didn't know I had even though I spend a lot of time carrying 2 toddlers around, these boxes were HEAVY!

Anyway, once we set up, we had a few minutes to spare for a coffee and bacon butty and then the melee began.

We didn't stop for almost the entire 6 hours the sale was open! Lots of lovely ladies and gents stopped by to say how much they had enjoyed reading about us in Patchwork and Quilting magazine and to remark about how lovely our fabrics were/are. Many will be making the trip to visit us in the shop over the coming weeks to see our new stocks - especially as so many local ladies didn't realise that we are soooooo close to them - with Stoke on Trent, Derby, Manchester and Birmingham less than 1 hours drive away! For those of you who didn't know, we are only 5 miles from J14 on the M6 and only a few more than that from J15 on the M6. Eccleshall is a lovely town with an abundance of exclusive boutique style shops and some excellent coffee shops/ pubs.

Once the show was over, it was time to take everything down, pack it all away and then get back to the shop to drop off remaining stock, the storage unit to drop off the shelving and show shopfittings, then over to Leicester to drop off the van we borrowed from my Brother in law and finally to Derby to pick up the boys from Granny! Phew!!! All in all, a very long, exhausting and utterly rewarding day! I can't wait to do it all again.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and wish us well. We look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Our next show for those of you who aren't able to visit us in person will be the Quilt and Embroidery show at Uttoxeter Race Course. Friday April 15th to Sunday April 17th 2011 (10am -5pm) (10am-4pm on Sun)

With help from Jenny, I have just about got the shop sorted and almost back to normal now; just figuring out where the new stock is going to go....in the coming weeks (amongst others) we will be taking the entire Spraytime range from Makower, significantly adding to our Kona Solids range from Robert Kaufman (I LOVE this fabric) and also the entire Essentials range from Henley Studios. We have also just had the new Kansas Troubles Favorites from Moda range in stock for just £9.50 per metre.

Been Busy...

Friday 3rd September saw the opening of the new Quilt Lounge at the shop. I love it and am very pleased with how it looks. We had a full house for our opening Coffee & Cupcake morning and will be running these every Friday morning between 10:30am and 1:30pm. The cost is just £3.75 including a beautiful looking (and tasting!) cupcake.

Here are some photos of the cupcakes that we had this week! Aren't the little marzipan buttons just adorable! I wanted to just look a them and not let anyone eat them!

It is a lovely bright and light room where you can come and relax, have a cup of coffee and read through my books and magazines for inspiration and new ideas. For husbands and drivers, it is the perfect place to rest yourself whilst waiting for your passengers to make their purchases.

It also provides the perfect opportunity for me to showcase just some of the quilts and hangings that students can make in my new range of classes and workshops.

Starting Thursday 23rd September we have our Beginners Sampler Quilt Class starting with the very popular and well known Chris Franses at the helm. Suitable for all skill levels, using a range of different techniques both old and new, by hand and machine, this course will build your knowledge and skill in various patchwork methods. By the end of the 8 sessions, you will have a beautiful sampler quilt to treasure.

October 7th 2010 sees the start of our "Simply Stitching" course with national expert Barbara Chainey. Savour the calm pace of traditional hand sewing techniques in a small group which will meet on selected Thursdays throughout October 2010, November 2010, February 2011 and March 2011. Learn a variety of hand techniques including hand piecing, paper piecing, sashiko, hand quilting, applique and more.

Wednesday 22nd September 2010 is the first of our Quilting for a Cause days. This week we will be making a start on quilts on behalf of Quilts of Valour. At a recent meeting of Staffordshire Patchworkers and Quilters, a request was put out for 12" blocks in red, white and blue colour ways. We have received over 100 blocks and now need to start the process of putting them together to make quilt tops.

Thursday 30th September 2010 will be the turn of Project Linus UK. One of our local reps, Heather has a variety of quilt kits all ready cut out and now needs our help to turn them into quilts for local recipients.

For both days, please come along with your sewing machines to the George Inn, Castle Street, Eccleshall, STAFFS, ST21 6DF between 10am and 3pm. There is plenty of free, level parking available and they do the most gorgeous homemade meals too!

And finally, this Thursday 9th September is an all day Sit n Sew at the George, so grab your sewing machine, a UFO or two and come along for a totally indulgent day of sewing and chatter. No hoovering, ironing or other chores to niggle at us...just blissful sewing space and time. See you there from 10am!

Thank Goodness for Jenny & Cupcakes

Well, Jenny came in again yesterday - phew....I was worried she might run for the hills after cutting all the fat quarters last week - especially as it was more of the same today!

My husband is getting a bit too used to hearing me going on and on about how glad I am to have her so I thought I'd gone on about it here instead....

Jenny is wonderful!!

She hoovered the shop for me (I never remember to do it) and she even put my milk in the fridge at the end of the day - another job I forget to do until I am halfway home and end up throwing it away in the morning.

She is great company and I am really enjoying our little chats. She is so knowledgeable about patchworking and quilting especially all the shops in the local area (and most other areas too!) She enjoys attending workshops and I am quite jealous to hear about the Ineke Berlyn one she has booked onto starting in October. (Ineke came and gave a talk recently at SPQ and she was a lovely lady with some beautiful pieces of work).

Please do pop into the shop on Thursdays to say hello and have a chat and you will see what I mean.

It is feeling quite lonely here today without her....:(

And on the Cupcake front, we will be hosting Coffee and Cupcake mornings here at the shop starting Friday 3rd September 2010 (10:30 - 13:30). Come along for a chat and a natter about all things quilty and enjoy a gorgeous homemade cupcake made by my friend Liz (Simply Scrumptious Cupcakes) and a hot drink. The session costs £3.75 including said cupcake and coffee and there is no need to book.

As featured in The North Staffordshire Magazine...

So I am soooooo excited this week as a 4 page spread of me and Pollyanna Patchwork has been published in The North Staffordshire Magazine! Yay!!

Background.....
A few weeks ago, a customer had mentioned her daughter's friend worked for the magazine and that was that. Days later the friend called and said she would like to do a small piece on me and the business for the Arts and Crafts section. I, of course agreed and we met and chatted for a while. Then we arranged for photos to be taken etc. I didn't know when the magazine would be coming out so was really surprised and pleased when Jenny mentioned it to me.

I rushed out and bought a couple of copies (got to send one to my Mum!!).

I can't put any photos or anything up for copyright reasons :( but I am really really chuffed with the article.

I also had a great day with Jenny on Friday even though I was totally unprepared for her as I had just had some rather bad news from a major supplier of mine...(more on that later - just trying to formulate a response/ approach to the problem).

It felt really weird having someone else in the shop, but she got on great with the customers that came in and I am convinced she a great choice! She spent the day cutting fat quarters as I had fallen so far behind with them. Below is one of the yummy new bundles we put together. (Can't have a post without a piccy). Also shown is a quilt kit which reminds me of fruit salad sweeties....mmmmmm

Still looking for someone for Tuesdays and Wednesdays from September so will have to put the feelers out...hint hint nudge nudge AW Seriously, if anybody local to the shop follows this and would be interested, please speak up!

Got to go now, hubby on holiday this week so lots of sorting out to do in the garage and house...moving my workshop back from the shop now so we can host small gatherings there from September. Watch this space for more news on that soon...

Roll Up, Roll Up.....

Wohoo!! Today my new Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Solid Roll Ups (jelly strip rolls) arrived and they are as yummy in the flesh as they looked on the website.

I have gone for the DUSTY and CLASSIC colourways to begin with but they do them in others too. At just £25.00 each including free P&P these guys are great for sashings, bindings, strip piecing, foundation piecing and much more. I LOVE Kona Solids. I have been experimenting with other suppliers and cottons, but I have to say I Kona Solids are the best in my opinion. If only I had space to stock all 221 colours!!

Anyhoo, must crack on now and finish a customers cot quilt as it is long overdue, but with being so poorly over the last few weeks I have fallen behind with things.

Where does the time go?

OK, so it has been ages since I last posted. I have given myself a big slap on the wrists but I do have an excuse...honest. So much has been going on. First I got the 'flu, only to get tonsillitis the following week! I blame the ~~carrier monkeys~~ children!

I have loads of new fabrics in stock including a selection of Moda's new tone-on-tone co-ordinates range called Puzzle Pieces. Me being me and just a little bit traditional, I have gone for the vines and berries variants to begin with. I have all possible colourways in stock but here are some of my favourite ones.

I have also had some new baby/ toddler fabrics in from Benartex including the gorgeous Billy Bear Panel and co-ordinating fabrics. What a cheeky looking bear he is!

A quick shop update for you now, I have a new starter coming in next week! Jennie will be joining me on a casual basis to help out in the shop, cutting fabrics, answering questions etc. so hopefully I can spend some more time on the other less glamorous side of the business - Paperwork, accounts, visiting suppliers...and maybe just a little stitching therapy as I feel as though I have really lost my sewing mojo at the moment. :(

Yummy New Fabrics In Stock

So I have seen 2 reps in the past 2 days and have once again spent a fortune!

First off, I saw the chap from EBOR Fabrics who supply Benartex amongst others here in the UK. I got some gorgeous new triple dyed Bali Batik fabrics from him!

They are scrumptious and in gorgeous summery fruit salad tones...

Here is a taster, there will be more on my webshop soon priced at an equally scrummy £10.50 per metre.....

Then today I have seen the fab Michael from ANBO - they are UK distributors for Robert Kaufman, Sevenberry, Windham Fabrics and others. I have ordered some great essentials from them including some really fine quality KONA Cotton Solids and Robert Kaufman Fusions fabrics....watch this space for their arrival.

For those of you that have been itching to get your hands on the fantastic time-saving Moda Bella Solids Jelly Strip rolls, I am pleased to say that we have now taken delivery of another load of solid white rolls. These are fantastic for sashings and save you loads of time in the cutting and preparation of sashing strips. Priced at just £22.50, there is free delivery as always via the website.

Family update

Stanley got his first shoes at the weekend. He is such a little dot that I can't believe he is walking already! His feet were sooooo small (an itty-bitty 2.5) that the shoe shop only had 1 pair to fit him. He loves them though and is really getting to prefer walking over crawling now.

William has been demonstrating what he going to be like in another 12 years time this week!! He seems to have gone from 2 to 14 years old in just a few days. Moping around and refusing to get up from his naps - instead just throwing himself back under his covers and stating "I'm still sleeping!" Oh dear - I think some quality time with Mum might be needed here...particularly as Stan has been teething this week and so has been somewhat of a limpet - having to be held a lot etc... I wonder if the guilt will ever go away that I never seem to spend enough time with either of them doing the fun stuff. It seems to be cooking, cleaning, washing etc. never the fun stuff that dad does like watching TV or playing in the garden!

Aren't Kids great??

I was going through some photos and just thought I'd share this one with you all.

It shows my plastic quilting frame doubling up as a garage for the boys toys!!

Soooo Cute - They run in and out of it, playing peek-a-boo with each other and it saves me having to take it down all the time...

On another note, I have been doodling in EQ6 with my Rouenneries fabrics and have come up with this one for the S-I-L's wedding instead. I will call it First Day Cover as it is a sort of postage stamp quilt, but like so many of my ideas, only uses 1 jelly and 1 charm pack plus some additional fabrics this time for sashings and border. It should finish up around 90" square which is perfect!

So many quilts to make, so little time!!

Did I mention that I have quite a few quilts that I need to make??

My sister in law is getting married in December this year and I would like to make a quilt for them as a gift. If I make them one though, I feel that I should make one for my other sister in law who got married last year. Then it is my In-Laws 50th Wedding Anniversary next year!

I need quick and easy quilts to make as I have so little spare time...I have just come across the Jelly Roll Quilt Along that is being run by Moose on the Porch quilts. The idea is that a new block is released every 2 weeks over the coming months. And it only uses 1 jelly roll and some additional fabrics!! Result! I am 3 blocks down, but should be able to get those done in no time.

My S-I-L's favourite colour is red so I am going to use the Rouenneries jelly roll by Moda that I have been holding onto and stroking for a little while now. I'll post pictures of the blocks as I go.

In the meantime, here is a picture of my latest Jelly Roll quilt. I call it my "Courthouse Comforter" as it is a variation on the courthouse steps block. I made the quilt top using just a single jelly roll and 1 charm pack.

The blocks finish up at 16" square and it was a really quick project to put together once I applied myself!

So why don't you join in with the QuiltAlong too? It looks like lots of fun!

I just need to find a nice Golden/ Yellow coloured jelly roll now for my in-laws wedding anniversary quilt.

Just a quick post to say Hi!

Not much happening at the moment. We have had the Easter holidays and I have also been moving house so things are all topsy-turvy. Still should be done by Monday and then I can concentrate on Polly things again.

I did have the nice chap (John) from Winbourne Fabrics visit me today and I have spent a fortune on some gorgeous new Moda fabrics. Watch this space - I'll post more details soon!

This weekend is also Quilts in the Garden. A local event that is very popular. Usually held at Trentham gardens, this year it has been moved to Uttoxeter Racecourse following the heavy snowfalls.

I am hoping to get over there on Sunday for a quick look before helping to take the quilts down afterwards.

Over 200 orders now....

Just a quick post to say that we have exceeded the 200 web orders mark this week. Yay!! I have had some new jelly rolls in the shop last week and they are proving to be massively popular.

The moda bella solids jelly rolls make sashings and bindings a breeze and save you loads of time cutting strips and at just £22.50 are excellent value for money. Available in White, Cream, Black and Red - I sold out the white within days and had to order more! (They are back in stock now...)

Oh and today, some builders whistled at me this morning! It is the first time in 3 years that I felt female!!! and not just round and fat. Made my day Guys thanks xx Perhaps I need to wear black boots and leggings more often...

I once was lost....

OK, so I am still no good at keeping a diary!

After many subtle (and some not so subtle) hints from Barbara Chainey, I have decided to have a go at reviving this blog. The plan is to try and post once a week to let you all know how things are going with Pollyanna Patchwork.

Lets bring you up to speed with things so far....In July 2009, I took the plunge and signed the lease on a high street shop in Eccleshall Staffordshire!!

I am open 3 days a week (Thursday - Saturdays) 10am to 4pm. This offers me the (almost!) perfect work life balance with the boys.

So far as the boys are concerned, the youngest cut his first tooth this week! 13 months it has taken but he is enjoying it - he is also set to walk any day too. The eldest is getting bigger day by day and is such a little boy that it frightens me. He is also a bit of minor bird and repeats almost everything I say - will really have to watch my reactions to bad drivers now! ;)

So far this week, I have finished the binding on a customers Cot Quilt and made some labels for the other UFO's I have finished this year.
For the rest of the week, I have the joy of trying to do a stocktake as here in the UK the end of the tax year is looming and I really should try to figure out how much stock I actually have stashed away here at the shop!

Webshop update

Just a quick update on how things are going with the online shop.

This month we have passed the 50 orders mark! Wohoo!

I have also taken out an ad in Patchwork and Quilting magazines web directory and so far have had 1 inquiry! No one has placed an order and quoted the code to receive their free gift so I don't know if it is working or not. I have placed the ad to run for 6 months so we will see how things are after this.

Having said that, visitor numbers are steadily increasing despite making no real effort to promote the site other than the above advert.

Went to the quilt show at Malvern last weekend and took a load of my leaflets with me. I left them in strategic places like the loos and on the organisers events table. Perhaps I'll see a few more visitors as a result?

Another cool idea that I had but have yet to implement is to visit the local libraries and put leaflets in all the fabric craft and patchwork and quilting books. I also thought about popping into the newsagents and slipping them into the magazines on the shelf!

I know its cheeky - but what is it that Delboy always says? He who dares...Wins!

OK OK...so I was never any good at keeping a diary or journal and it seems it might be the same with the blogging...!?

So much has happened in the last few months, but here is a quick timeline of events:-

2nd February - Fabric Sale at Stone, ST15 0EQ

A good day which was reasonably well attended despite my not sending letters out until late and driving around with an out of date poster in my car. To make matters worse, I left the leys to the venue at home so had to drive 15 miles back to pick them up! That meant that we were late getting in and set up and so we had customers arriving before I had managed to get all the fabrics out and on the shelves. Add to that being 34 weeks pregnant meant that I was a lot slower than usual and leaning over the cutting table was a bit of a challenge!

27th/ 28th February - Something's afoot....

Felt really odd all day Friday (27th) although baby bubble not due until 16th March beginning to wonder if something is happening. Retired to bed with Clary Sage soaked hanky to have a good rest.

4:30am - uh-oh....something warm trickles down my leg. Turn to other half and tell him not to get excited but I think my waters have broken. Boy! Did they go when I stood up! Headed straight downstairs to get something to eat in anticipation of labour beginning. Back to bed until 8:00am with minor cramping and continued water leaking.

11:00am - decide to call midwife to see what is happening. Gutted that my birth pool isn't due to arrive until Monday. :( Midwife arrives and announces that baby is breech - transfer to hospital.

1:00pm - Ask for pethidine shot to help me relax.

3:09pm - Baby Stanley arrives safe and well!

7:00pm - Head home to introduce Stanley to his brother William.

New Year - New Beginnings

OK, a new year and I thought I'd give this blogging malarky a whirl.

Having lost touch somewhat in the last few years being pregnant and then being a Mum, I decided last year that I wanted to have a go at setting up my own business! Unbeknownst to me at the time I was already pregnant with my second child! (Due March 2009).

I have set this blog up to let my customers and friends know about what is going on in the shop, what new products we have and what it is really like being a full time Mum and fabric Mogul!

My passion is for crafting and in particular Patchwork and Quilting has grasped my over the last few years. I love fabrics of all kinds and since my son was born, I have found it increasingly difficult to justify trawling around the country looking for new and exciting fabrics. Therefore, I decided to bring them to me!

I hope you enjoy this blog and that maybe you learn something new and perhaps are even inspired to give it a go yourselves (setting up in business and of course blogging!).
